ARTS ON CAMPUS BRINGS LOU SCHELLENBERG EXHIBIT TO DELAWARE VALLEY UNIVERSITY
Delaware Valley University Life Sciences Building Atrium (Second Floor), 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown, PA 18901 (map)
Date: 11/8/18-1/31/19 Time: 9am-7pm    WEBSITE     Sponsored by: Delware Valley University
Delaware Valley University will host a special exhibit, celebrating the work of painter Lou Schellenberg. The show entitled, "Contemporary Landscape Paintings: Show More...Rural Pennsylvania," will open Nov. 8 and run through Jan. 31 in the second-floor atrium of the University's Life Sciences Building.
"The University's Arts on Campus initiative is working to enhance the experience for both students and visitors to Delaware Valley University's campus by providing a variety of art exhibits," said DelVal Director of Continuing and Professional Studies Admission Linda Lefevre. "We are pleased to host Lou Schellenberg's show and hope that the campus and community will take advantage of the opportunity to see her work on our campus."
Schellenberg, who lives near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, earned her MFA at the University at Albany. After receiving her MFA, Schellenberg accepted a full-time teaching position in Pennsylvania where she continues to live and paint. She is a founding board member of the Mount Gretna School of Art, an intensive summer painting program.
Schellenberg's art has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows in galleries, art centers, and museums throughout the U.S. and Canada. She has won many awards including a fellowship from the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, and first place in Pennsylvania's Art of the State exhibit.
Over the many years of looking at, teaching, and creating art, Schellenberg has remained committed to observation as a starting point in drawing and painting. Her work is best described as landscape paintings that include architectural elements. Her paintings reflect a love of rural places, changing seasons, and the human relationship with nature.

It is with great excitement and anticipation that beginning on October 5, 2018, we are presenting Bucks County's first Art Hotel venture to our communities Show More...of art enthusiasts far and near. With Bucks County's already rich artistic history, its large selection of galleries, art events and festivals, the culinary offerings, the beauty of its landscape at all seasons, and its deeply rooted tradition of historic Inns, the blending of art and hospitality comes as a natural next step.
In this first Art Hotel exhibition and art sale, we are thrilled to have brought together one of Bucks County's most treasure Inns, one of the area's most established Fine Art galleries and the works by an African American expressionist painter from Philadelphia.
Having a keen sense of appreciation for this area's cultural diversity, curator Stephanie Lisle was inspired to combine the colorful and lively world of art exhibitions with the atmosphere of comfort and tranquility at the Centre Bridge Inn in New Hope, Pennsylvania.
The beautiful, historic, and well established Center Bridge Inn is not only a perfect get away retreat in bucolic Bucks County, it is set in the idyllic landscape of the Delaware River, perfect backdrop for weddings, romantic dinners and overnight stays during all seasons. Their selection of eight sophisticated and tastefully decorated guest rooms already feature themed artwork by Bucks County contemporary and traditional artists.
Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio has been a leading authority on American Art, and an important member of the Bucks County art community for almost 40 years. Specializing in 19th and 20th century American paintings, with a focus on painters from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Gratz Gallery offers a wide selection of Fine Art from Impressionism to Modern Art. In addition to art investment Gratz Gallery offers custom framing and fine art conservation services. Included in the gallery's extensive selection of art, is a collection of works by African American expressionist painter Bernard Harmon.
Bernard Harmon (1935 - 1989) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter and a well loved teacher in the Philadelphia area. He was a graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School and Temple's Tyler School of Art. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, at the University of the Arts, and at Drexel University. Harmon's portraits were commissioned by Philadelphia Jazz organist Jimmy Smith and Mayor Richardson Dilworth. Bernard Harmon was considered a Renaissance man by friends and colleagues for his interests not only in art but music and theater as well. He was familiar and friends with many contemporary African American artists such as Doc Thrash, Selma Burke, Paul Keene Jr., Allen Freelon and Charles Searles. His work has a loose expressionist style that can be related to the work of Alice Kneel.
When visiting the Delaware River community, stop in for dinner and a drink, listen to live music on the weekends, stay for the night, and get enchanted by the colorful art of Bernard Harmon. But don't wait too long; exhibitions will change just as the seasons do.
The Center Bridge Inn is located at 2998 River Rd, New Hope, PA 18938. Their hours of operations are by appointment for events, and restaurant hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 12 - 9 pm and Sunday 5 - 8pm. For more information please visit their website at www.centrebridgeinn.com

Frank Hyder, who splits his time between Philadelphia and Miami, has become known for working across a variety of media. His paintings and sculpture have Show More...been widely exhibited in venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art's Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Museum in California, the La Salle Museum of Art in Philadelphia, and the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in New York among others. Hyder has also created several public art works, including three murals through the City of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program: Hanging Garden of I-95, Honey's Garden, and Bell's Pond.
Hyder's fascination with the public sphere has manifested in a multimedia experience titled The Janis Project. Begun in 2015 and still continuing today, Hyder has created over a dozen large-scale, double-faced inflatable sculptures of heads. Hyder states of The Janis Project that each head, "which at once references Moai of Easter Island, Olmec heads and, the ancient Roman god of new endeavors, at the same time has its roots in street art and inflatable toys...Janis carries a message of equality and good will and dares to step out of the normal world of Art museums or Art Galleries to be among us. Made of resilient nylon and paint, Janis has found a place to make us all consider issues with a smile that often divide us."

The National Canal Museum will debut an exhibition of the works of folk artist Frank "WYSO" Wysochansky (1915-1994) on Saturday, November 10 as part of Show More...its participation in the regionwide 250th anniversary celebration of the first documented use of anthracite coal in America.

The exhibition Frank Wyso: The Coal Connection will showcase some of the Blakely, PA native's compelling work depicting the lives of coal miners. Having lost his father in a mining accident, WYSO was familiar with the harsh realities of coal miners' lives, as well as the strong community ties these dangerous conditions fostered. It was this intimate knowledge which would influence his art throughout his life. His evocative paintings and sculptures document the tools and working conditions of the anthracite coal mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the modest means and lifestyles of the coal miners' families.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1:00 p.m., Steven Lichak of the WYSO Foundation will give a talk on the eccentric life and innovative works of WYSO at the National Canal Museum to celebrate the exhibition's opening. Family-friendly art activities held in the museum's Welcome Center will also allow children and adults to explore WYSO's artistic techniques. The talk and activities are free as part of museum admission.
Other upcoming events include a book signing and talk by Vince Hydro, author of the Mauch Chunk Switchback, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 pm and a holiday swag-making workshop with Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Executive Director Elissa Garofalo on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. The museum's other special exhibition, Powering America: Pennyslvania's Anthracite Railroads, also continues through Dec. 23. This exhibition features a working model railroad platform with a coal mine and patch town as its centerpiece. Powering America and the National Canal Museum's extended opening in November and December this year are generously supported by a grant from the County of Northampton's Hotel Tax Program.. ...Show Less

It's a Wonderful Life, a play based on the classic 1946 holiday movie starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, will open just in time to start the holiday Show More...season on November 15th at Voorhees High School. The story follows George Bailey, a husband and father, who questions that value of his life when a significant sum of money goes missing from the accounts at his family's Building and Loan. Bailey, played by senior Deven Runge, has had his share of disappointments. He has put his dreams of world travel, college, and building airfields and skyscrapers on hold to keep his father's business afloat when his father dies suddenly. George manages to keep the Building and Loan from failing and falling into the miserly hands of his father's competitor, and the wealthiest man in town, Henry Potter, played by sophomore Harry Sperduto. Although he does not realize it, George has many things to celebrate, such as a loving and caring wife, Mary, played by senior Maddy Kaminsky, four beautiful children, and many concerned friends and family members. When George's forgetful Uncle Billy, played by sophomore, Ian Love, accidentally misplaces $8000 on Christmas Eve, George can find no way out of this monumental problem. As he reflects on the value of his life, he is joined by a guardian angel, Clarence Odbody, played by freshman Alastair Stewart. George wishes that he was never born, and Clarence in an attempt to reason with George grants that wish. George learns that beautiful Bedford Falls, has become the seedy town of Pottersville, and that his absence has left an "awful hole" in many lives, and that "each man's life, touches so many other lives". George can stand it no longer and begs for his life back. He returns home to find that his friends and family have raised enough money to solve the shortage.

"We are pleased to host Lou Schellenberg's show and hope that the campus and community will take advantage of the opportunity to see her work on our campus."
Schellenberg, who lives near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, earned her MFA at the University at Albany. She is a founding board member of the Mount Gretna School of Art, an intensive summer painting program.

Leslie Pontz's work deals with topics such as community, conflict, and growth by applying the vocabulary of textiles to materials not commonly associated Show More...with the medium. Rusted tools find a home with soft woven pieces while metal is crocheted like yarn. These surprising juxtapositions of materials makes categorizing Pontz's work difficult; it is sculpture, it is fabric, it is installation.
Her work also, in many cases, invites participation from its viewers. Whether following a meditative journey proscribed by Pontz in and around her work, or by literally rearranging portions of her sculptural pieces, viewers are both invited to be shaped by Pontz's work and shape it themselves. The story of Pontz's own life, that of her community, and visitors to the Museum will be woven together in the exhibition by participation, conversation, and collaboration.. ...Show Less
